2025 NCSEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarships

NCSEA Diversity in Structural Engineering Scholarship Eligibility:
 

• Students historically underrecognized in structural engineering (including but not limited to: Black/African Americans, Native/Indigenous Americans, Hispanic/Latino, other people of color, those with disabilities, veterans, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community). 
• Any currently enrolled junior college, undergraduate, or graduate-level student who will be registered in the fall term of the year of award and has a focused career interest in structural engineering (to be defined in the personal statement) and/or is actively pursuing a structural engineering degree at an accredited institution in the United States.
• Scholarships will be awarded only to those students who will employ them to continue their formal undergraduate or graduate education at a recognized educational institution.
• Previous holders of these scholarships are eligible to apply in any succeeding competition for these awards provided the other requirements of eligibility are satisfied.
• NCSEA membership and/or involvement is not required to apply.

           General Application
           Submission deadline is Sunday, February 16, 2025
           Application must include:
 

• Academic transcript (upload file)
• Financial need statement (up to 250 words)
• Personal statement (up to 500 words) addressing why the applicant wants to pursue a career in structural engineering and how the applicant's experiences will benefit the profession, community and society as a whole.
• Reference Forms - A minimum of one (1) and a maximum of two (2) reference forms providing insight into the applicant’s character, accomplishments, work ethic, values, and possible need for the scholarship. At least one must be from a professor, faculty advisor, and/or another member of the student’s educational institution.  An additional reference may come from a member of the educational institution or by a work/volunteer colleague or supervisor, mentor, coach or friend. References from family members are discouraged.

Selection
 

• All applications will be reviewed by the NCSEA Foundation Scholarship Review Committee. Copies of all application materials may be shared with the Foundation Board of Directors, the donors of endowed and named scholarships, and/or representatives of an applicant's state Structural Engineers Association.
• Selection will be based on appraisal of applicant’s stated interest in the structural engineering profession, education plans, academic performance, involvement in related student organizations/chapters/clubs/activities, potential for development, and demonstrated leadership qualities.
• The Foundation Scholarship Review Committee may conduct interviews with scholarship finalists.
• The Foundation Board of Directors will make the final decision regarding awards and may, at its own discretion, choose not to make any award(s) in a particular year.

Awards

• The NCSEA Foundation plans to award more than $50,000 this year.
• The recipient(s) will be notified of selection in April 2025. 
• Award funds will be sent via check to the address provided on the scholarship application within 90 days of award notification.
• Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the annual NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit as well as receive complimentary registration and travel stipends.
